Tens of thousands of Australian adults are unaware they carry high-risk DNA variants for preventable diseases like cancer and heart disease. Most aren't eligible for any publicly funded genetic testing, and many won't have any family history of disease to indicate their risk.

Tens of thousands of Australian adults are unaware they carry high-risk DNA variants for preventable diseases like cancer and heart disease. Most aren't eligible for any publicly funded genetic testing, and many won't have any family history of disease to indicate their risk.

The DNA Screen program - https://dnascreen.monash.edu/ - tested 10,000 young adults. It was extremely popular and found hundreds of high-risk Australians.

We’re calling on the Health Minister, Mark Butler, to fund the expansion of DNA Screen to provide life-saving testing to more Australians.

Every Australian has the right to know their genetic risks, and to be given the opportunity to act on them.

Join us by writing to your MP and add your voice to a growing call for Government to fund preventive health using genomics.

Genetic testing is a big topic of discussion in Parliament House right now, with a bill to ban the use of genetic results in life insurance introduced in Nov 2025 and ready to be debated and passed in early 2026.

This protection paves the way for greater investment in and access to genetic testing for prevention of disease. Please write to your MP and encourage them to raise this with Minister Butler, to consider funding the expansion of DNA screening in the 2026 budget.

The impact will be much greater if you personalise the email or send it in your own words, by sharing your personal interest in DNA screening for disease prevention in adults, or any stories or experiences you have.

Some key points you might want to include:

  • High genetic risk of cancer and heart diease in at least 1 in 50 adult Australians often goes undetected because most people are not eligible for publicly funded testing.
  • Using genomic screening to prevent disease is the future, and we need to start investing in prevention to save the government money, save lives and increase productivity.
  • Adult Australians want access to information about genetic risk of preventable diseases. The best way to provide equitable access to all adult Australians is through a national program funded by the government.
